5 Reasons Nonprofits Waste Time on the Wrong Grants
Most grant teams aren't losing because their writing is bad — they're losing because they're applying to the wrong opportunities. Here's how to fix that.
The most common grant writing problem isn't poor writing. It's poor prioritization.
Here are five patterns we see repeatedly — and what to do instead:
1. Applying without checking eligibility first
Before reading the full RFP, confirm you meet the basic eligibility criteria: geography, org type, focus area, and budget range. Ten minutes of eligibility checking can save ten hours of application work.
2. Ignoring effort signals
Not all grants are created equal. A $5,000 rolling grant with a short application form is a very different commitment than a $250,000 federal grant with a 50-page narrative requirement. Match effort to reward.
3. Chasing the largest award
Bigger grants attract more competition and require more capacity. For many smaller nonprofits, a $10,000–$50,000 grant with moderate competition is a better use of time than a $500,000 opportunity with hundreds of applicants.
4. Starting from scratch every time
If your team rewrites your mission statement and program description for every grant, you're wasting significant time. Build a library of strong, reusable narratives that can be adapted for each application.
5. Not knowing what the funder actually funds
Reading a funder's website homepage isn't research. Review their recent grants list, their stated priorities for this cycle, and any signals from their program officers. Alignment matters more than word count.
